He stripped the hand back to its lumed core and then framed it inside a circle — a halo of luminous paint, with three small bars projecting from the center like the points of a compass. From the outside, it looked like a tiny Mercedes-Benz emblem. The name stuck.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeventy years later, that exact hand is still the gold standard for legibility underwater.
